Bridging the skills gap from university to market for Software Developers

Two weeks left for aspiring software engineers to apply for 12-month paid internship with Upstream

Athens & London, September 30, 2021 – Leading mobile marketing technology company, Upstream, is putting out one more call for aspiring software engineering graduates to apply to its “Start at Upstream” paid internship program before the submissions window closes on October 17th. Interested parties should visit www.startatupstream.com to learn how to apply.

This year’s program, which will give another 10 software engineers the opportunity to work with the mobile technology leader and partake in intensive training sessions, is doing its part to help close the so-called “skills gap”  in digital and technology specializations. Organizations worldwide have found it difficult to find highly skilled and prepared workers that are ready to meet the challenges of high-pressure technology environments, with 60% of employers in Greece, where Upstream’s R&D is headquartered, finding it difficult to adequately fill vacancies.

Upstream CEO, Dimitris Maniatis, commented: "We designed Start at Upstream to help bridge the gap between universities and the job market, equipping aspiring engineers and computer scientists with the kind of skills and expertise that are currently in high demand. The technology ecosystem here in Greece is growing exponentially, and we need carefully trained individuals to help us compete on an international stage, particularly in a market where anyone can work from anywhere.”

For the first two months of the internship, participants will embark on the kind of high-intensity post-graduate training that would usually cost several thousand euros to take part in. Interns will not only get this education for free but will be paid while they are learning and developing career-defining skills.

For the rest of the program, interns will be joining Upstream’s engineering ranks contributing to the implementation of the company’s marketing automation solutions. “This is a program designed by experienced, practicing software engineers for software engineers, and is the only one of its kind in Greece,” explained Upstream’s CTO, Natalia Mila. She continued: "Apart from the highly-paid 12-month combination of training and work, the graduates learn skills that the market is specifically looking for, all under the guidance of our engineers through personalized mentoring."

After the completion of the program, interns will have the opportunity to continue their career at Upstream, having already enriched their CV in a successful global technology company and a multicultural environment. “It’s one thing for companies to increase their recruitment drive,” added Maniatis, “but if they are able to nurture new talent and address specific skills gaps with the market, everybody stands to benefit - including the younger generation.”
